Day 23 Glad You Asked

August 01, 2022

Scripture: Mark 9:17-24 Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not”… When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”  "If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

Devotional: If you ever struggle with trusting God, today’s passage is a great encouragement that, in the midst of your doubts and unbelief, Jesus meets you there.

Do you detect the question in the father’s dialogue with Jesus? The disciples could not cast out the demon that tortured his son, so it’s understandable that he wondered if Jesus could possibly do it. “If you can do anything” he questioningly says to Jesus.

“If you can?” Jesus replies. And then He makes a stunning statement: “Everything is possible for him who believes.”

Jesus is declaring to this burdened father, who is likely at the end of his rope, close to losing hope, desperately clinging to a shred of faith, that he has come to the right place. Because everything is possible with God! Even if you only have a shred of trust; faith as small as a mustard seed, minuscule trust, Jesus can work with that.

Aren’t you so glad that is the posture of our Savior? You can trust God because, with Him, EVERYTHING is possible.

Reflect:

  • Put yourself in the place of this father. How desperate do you think he was to see his son experience relief from his affliction?
  • In what area do you most want/need to trust God? Invite God to help you in your unbelief.
