Scripture: James 1:27 "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
Devotional: I’ve always loved this passage in James because it shows how we can tangibly live out our faith in the purest form. As you and I care for the most vulnerable in our society – widows and orphans- we are aligning ourselves with the heart of God.
Although we don’t often use these same labels in our current culture, widows and orphans were common and among those who were the most threatened in the first century. Many would starve or become prey for abuse and unspeakable acts enacted upon them. They would be thrust into lives of desperation just to survive.
The same is true today. But we often overlook our responsibility as followers of Christ to directly care for their needs because we have government programs to do that. Let’s not neglect the opportunity we have to live out our faith by noticing and caring for those individuals God may put in our path.
- Think about what you can do to help care for a single mom, foster kids, or other kids who may have been abandoned by a parent or parents. Pray for God to reveal some way you can be personally connected and involved in another’s life to show them God’s care.
