Scripture: Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
Devotional: Have you ever been in a relationship, whether a friend or romantic relationship, where you thought that person was in it for the long haul, but when things got tough, they bailed?
There is nothing worse than that feeling of abandonment, rejection or betrayal that lack of commitment brings.
This wise proverb tells us that a friend loves at all times and shines brightest in times of adversity. In fact, godly relationships are forged and formed in the crucible of adversity; those times when a reliance on God is the only thing that gets you through.
That’s the beauty of offering yourself wholly to Christ, fully committed to the Jesus Way. When we’re committed to Him, we can more easily be committed to other relationships in our lives, allowing God to work in fashioning something strong, beautiful, and lasting.
What fitting Paul’s words in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Reflect:
- Are you the kind of friend that you want to have? One that endures through adversity and never gives up?
