Scripture: Hebrews 13:5-9 NLT Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,
“I will never fail you.
I will never abandon you.”
So we can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper,
so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?”
Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them .
Devotion: If I asked you what the biggest thing you were dreaming about right now is, what would it be? Maybe it’s an all-inclusive vacation on a warm, beautiful beach. Maybe it is a bigger house for your family. Maybe it is a business you have always wanted to own. Many of the things that we dream about, while certainly not wrong to desire or look forward to, are temporary.
When we receive those things, we should not put our hope in them. All it takes is an unexpected storm in life to rip them out from under us. You might finally have that bigger house when you lose your job and need to downsize. Or you might finally own the business when the economy tanks and you need to close shop. If we have put our hope, joy, and love in the things of this world, our world will be rocked when they are gone. Instead, we can put our trust and joy in the one who weathers the storm with us. He says, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you” (Hebrews 13:5).
No matter what comes our way in this life, we can build our life on the solid rock of Christ. He is with us always and is a firm foundation. It reminds me of the verses from Matthew 7:24-25, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” When the storms of life come, when the winds beat against us and try to knock us down, let our hope be in the Lord, not in the things of this world. Let us fix our gaze on Him. Let us trust that He will never leave us or forsake us.
Reflect:
- Who or what are you putting your hope in? Will it stand firm throughout the struggles of life?
