Scripture: John 1:14, 16-17 ESV And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth… For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Devotion: As we have been walking through the book of Jonah, one thing is apparent: God’s mercy and grace. Nineveh is full of wickedness, and God sends a prophet to tell of His love and forgiveness. Jonah is disobedient, and God rescues Him from the sea when he surrenders his heart. He is always full of mercy and grace. Grace upon grace.
That’s a statement that I have always loved from Scripture, “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (John 1:16) Overwhelming, never-ending grace. It perpetuates every area of our lives in every season.
When I wake up and praise You right away,
Grace upon grace.
When I can hardly roll out of bed because life is too much to bear,
Grace upon grace.
When I am greeted by the sunrise and reminded of Your new mercies,
Grace upon grace.
When it seems as though the whole world is dark,
Grace upon grace.
When I use my words to honor You and share of Your unfailing love,
Grace upon grace.
When I use my words to hurt others and build up myself,
Grace upon grace.
When I am slow to speak, slow to become angry, and quick to listen,
Grace upon grace.
When I respond harshly and will not hear others out,
Grace upon grace.
When I turn to You in my moments of weakness,
Grace upon grace.
When I succumb and give into sin,
Grace upon grace.
When I wonder if You are really there and if you care at all,
Grace upon grace.
When I am indifferent toward You and at a standstill,
Grace upon grace.
When I passionately pursue You and look for You in everything,
You give me grace upon grace.
All my life, no matter what I do, in every season, you give me grace upon grace. I can’t earn it. I am undeserving of it. And yet, you continue to give it to me. Thank you, Lord, that you never run out of grace.
Reflect:
- In what areas of your life do you need to press into God’s grace more?
