Scripture: Malachi 3:6 “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”
Devotion: Having a perspective of praise changes how you face whatever comes your way. Have you seen this play out in your life before? It certainly doesn’t always come easily. Often, our first response when things don’t go how we had planned is fear, worry, anger, anxiety… a whole slew of emotions. But when we take the time to pivot our thoughts to God and turn our hearts to Him in a posture of praise, that all changes. Part of that is because we can praise God, not simply for what He has done or is doing in our lives, but also because of who He is. His very nature is worthy of praise. That means, no matter what we are going through, He deserve our worship.
This week, we are going to look at some of the many attributes of God. Hopefully, this will help us to understand Him in a deeper way and help us to praise Him all the more. Today, let us be reminded that God is unchanging. He is the same God that was there before the beginning of time and will be there forevermore. His character, plans, and promises do not change.
Sam Storms, a pastor and theologian, writes this about God’s unchanging character, “What all this means, very simply, is that God is dependable! Our trust in him is therefore a confident trust, for we know that he will not, indeed cannot, change. His purposes are unfailing, his promises unassailable. It is because the God who promised us eternal life is immutable that we may rest assured that nothing, not trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword shall separate us from the love of Christ. It is because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever that neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, not even powers, height, depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. 8:35-39)!”
As we continue to walk through this series on anxiety, let us find a bit of calm and peace in the fact that God is unchanging. He is the same God that has been with us in the best moments of our lives and will be there in the worst. Our circumstances and emotions don’t change the very character of God or His plans for us. He is always good, faithful, just, and true.
Reflect:
- Have you ever thought much about God’s unchanging nature? How could that shift your perspective on what is going on in your life and the world?
