Day 15 Promises

May 11, 2025

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

Devotion: As we work through this series entitled “Promises,” it might be good to take a step back for a moment and look at the faithfulness of God. Our verse from today is from 2 Corinthians 1:20, and it directly answers the question, “Does God keep His promises?”

This verse has three main pieces within it. One is, “For no matter how many promises God has made.” Another is, “in Christ.” And the piece that connects the two is, “yes.” Through Jesus, all of the promises of God are affirmed. In Christ, all of the promises that God has made are secured and guaranteed. That means that for those of us who are in Jesus, we can trust that every promise that God has made will come true.

We can look to Jesus for the fulfillment of the many of the Old Testament prophecies. For example, the promise to Abraham that the nations would be blessed through his lineage was fulfilled by Jesus in Acts 3:25-26. The promise that a virgin will give birth, and he will be called Immanuel was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit came on the virgin Mary and conceived Jesus in Luke 1:35. And the promise that Jesus would be the perfect sacrifice once and for all is fulfilled through Him as it is written in Hebrews 10:5-10. These are just a few examples of God’s promises coming to pass.

But each of these examples points to His faithfulness. And because He is unchanging, He is the same faithful God now. The promises that Jesus made to His people, which includes you and me, are still applicable. And with that, this week we will dive into the promise of peace.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

Reflect:

  • A conservative estimate places Jesus as fulfilling at least 300 prophecies with His earthly ministry. What does that tell you about the character of God?
  • Knowing that God has fulfilled His promises in the past, how does that impact your trust in Him fulfilling His promises to you?
