Day 15 Who Am I?

June 15, 2025

Devotion: The world will always have something to say about what you do. In one way or another, the things that you do will never be good enough. Someone is always disappointed, whether it’s warranted or not. So, when we feel as though we are doing our best and our best isn’t good enough, perhaps we need a reminder about who God created us to be and what He created us to do.

Matthew 5:13-16 says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Context here is helpful. What on earth does it mean to be salt? And how can we be light? First, salt had two main purposes during the first century in the Middle East. One was to preserve food. Similarly, one of the things that God created us as Christians to do is be preservatives in the world, preserving it from the evil that is inherent since we live in a fallen world. The other way that salt was used is just like it is often used today, as a flavor enhancer. As salt has a positive influence on the flavor of food, those who love Jesus will have a positive impact on this world. We can be peacemakers and exemplify the love of our Lord, which will stand out.

When it comes to being light, it is perhaps a bit more explanatory. In the midst of darkness, we are called to be light. Our good works, which are produced from an overflow of our relationship with God, are to shine for all to see.

As we look to walk humbly in obedience to the Lord, our actions won’t be greeted with approval by everyone. But we can be reminded of who He created us to be and what He created us to do: to preserve the good in the world, to have a positive influence on those around us, and to let works be a light that stands out in the darkness. When we live in obedience in this way, we can leave behind what the world says about us and instead embrace a life lived in pursuit of Jesus.

Reflect:

  • In your own life, how can you be salt and light to those around you?
