Day 16 Calm

Scripture: John 5:26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.

Devotion: All of God’s attributes are worthy of praise. We know that He is all good, meaning that His very character, and every aspect of it, is good. But if we don’t seek to know our God, it can be difficult to praise Him in all circumstances. One very comforting characteristic of God is that He is self-sufficient. 

That is hard to imagine, right? We have so many needs. At the bare minimum, we require food, water, and oxygen. One of those is in the very air we breathe, so we hardly even think about that one! There is also the need for shelter, protection, and clothing. Those are just the physical needs. We also have emotional needs, like the need for love and companionship. In order to be a contributing member in society, we need some form of teaching- whether that be someone that we walk alongside of who shows us the ropes or formal classroom education. We also have spiritual needs. Arguably, our dependence on knowledge of God is our strongest need and desire. 

But God has no needs. He does not look to us or His creation to fill Him up. His goodness, peace, mercy, and grace are a never-ending well. We can go to Him to satisfy our needs and never worry that He is going to run out. We can continuously go to Him, asking for more grace, peace, and mercy, and not fear we will run Him dry. He is self-sufficient and always overflowing in each of these areas. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21).
