Day 17 The Church

January 30, 2024

Scripture: Acts 2:46-47 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people...

Devotional: What most characterized the first-century church?

Community.

Every day the church met together. They met in the church, they met in each other’s homes – they had a sense of togetherness no matter where they were. Because they knew they were part of something bigger than themselves; something other-worldly. They embraced this community that was an essential part of their spiritual journey. They loved one another.

The early church was on a mission together. And they needed to rely upon one another to accomplish that mission. Not only in sharing the good news of Christ, but demonstrating it through their authentic biblical community, just as Jesus did when He lived and walked with His disciples and followers.

Consider this: do you simply come to church, or do you feel you are part of the church? The two are very different. It’s a bit like a sports game – are you on the sidelines watching, or are you in the game? Are you contributing to the success of the “team”?

The early church recognized that being on the sidelines wasn’t an option. They knew they needed one another to be “in the game.” We’re taught to not rely on or depend on anyone else. We’re taught to be independent and self-sufficient. But, according to Scripture, that’s not God’s way. He’s wired us to desperately need one another, but we’ve forgotten that truth.

This week, consider rediscovering God’s intention for His creation and His church.  That is, to live and to work, and to function in community with one another.

Reflect:

  • Think about your own attitude. Do you tend to feel you must be independent and self-sufficient? Or do you recognize the importance of community in your own life?
