Scripture: 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Devotion: We are all tempted. In some way, shape, or form, we face temptation throughout our lives. And temptation itself isn’t a sin. How we respond to the temptation determines whether or not we sin. And the truth? The truth is that sometimes we will. We won’t always flee from temptation or rise to meet it head on. We fall short and give in. And that is when we thank God for his grace.
Earlier this week, we talked about writing Scripture on our heart. The Word of God can help us defend ourselves from temptation. And as we look at what happens when we give in to temptation, 1 John 1:9 is a verse that we would find beneficial in calling to mind. It says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” This is our Scripture for today because I think it is so important.
When we walk through the topic of temptation, it can be easy to get down on yourself. Maybe you feel as though you have given in too many times, so what’s the point of fighting it now? Maybe you have been fleeing from it time and time again, and you are exhausted. That’s why it is important to remember that you are made new. That you are a child of the one true King. That when you confess your sins, He forgives them. All of them. And not only that, He also purifies you.
You are not defined by the temptation that you face or the number of times that you have screwed up. Your worth and your value come from your Heavenly Father who has more than enough grace for you time and time again.
Reflect:
- Take some time to meditate on 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
- What does this verse mean to you? Pray through it and thank God for the truth that is found in it.
