Devotion: Every once in a while, it is good to just sit and meditate on a verse. Perhaps the verses for today are familiar to you, or maybe they are completely new. Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Take a moment to reread those verses, slowly. Really let the truth of them soak in.
Now, we should not add to Scripture what isn’t there, but the Apostle Paul makes it pretty clear that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of Christ. He lists life and death, angels and demons, the present and the future, height and depth, and anything in creation as things that won’t be able to stand in our way. If we hone in on the phrase “anything else in all creation,” we realize that this means that the things that we do (and don’t do) cannot separate us from His love.
- Neither having a relationship with Jesus for your whole life nor being a new believer
- Neither having a lot of wealth to give nor having very little to share
- Neither a past riddled with sin nor a life on the straight and narrow
- Neither the approval of others nor the persecution of the world
None of it can separate us from the love of Jesus. His grace is more than sufficient for every single one of us. His love is unending and overwhelming. We can never do enough to be enough. Christ alone is enough. What a beautiful reminder that is.
Reflect:
- Do you have anything in your life that you feel as though separates you from Christ? How can you give that over and remove that barrier?
