Scripture: Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Devotion: As we look at the topic of abuse, I want to remind you that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. We do not have a God who is aloof and distant, but rather one that cares deeply for each of us. And when you are hurt and broken, He is near.
The verse for today so beautifully says that He “binds up their wounds.” When we give Him our hearts and all the broken pieces of our lives, He closes them up. He restores us. He renews us. He redeems us.
Psalm 34:18 (NLT) says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” This is another beautiful truth: He rescues us. When we are shattered, defeated, and ready to give up, He saves us. Time and time again, no matter where we find ourselves, He is there. He is our Keeper. Take some time to let the comforting words of Psalm 23 remind you of this truth today.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Reflect:
- Have you ever experienced a wound that you needed the Lord to bind up?
- How have you felt the nearness of the Lord throughout your life?
