Scripture: Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
Devotion: “Look to your future because God is in control.”
Have you ever experienced a time of worry that just consumed your thoughts? And then, after a little time goes by, you don’t even remember it happening? I have had plenty of these. Let me preface this story by saying that the thoughts and emotions that you have after recently delivering a baby can be a bit… unpredictable and wild. Well, I remember with our son, he had started to develop a flat spot on the back of his head. He was a very good sleeper and always slept on his back. But naturally, my mind went to physical therapy and dealing with him wearing a helmet for months. I thought people would judge me as a mom for the fact that he needed one. I didn’t know how it would impact his sleep. I didn’t know if he would throw a fit every time he went to some sort of therapy or had to put on a helmet. And, in this specific scenario, it turns out that all of that worry was for nothing. After about three months of some basic chiropractor care and making sure that he was getting plenty of tummy time, his head started to round out.
Even if this hadn’t been the case, as I have had friends whose children have needed helmets for this very reason, it usually ends up being a blip on the radar. What once consumed your thoughts and your mind, you hardly think about now.
Sometimes, in the midst of our worries, it can be helpful to look to the future. We are told not to worry about tomorrow (Matthew 6:34) and to trust God to provide for us every day. The things that we worry about now will likely find some resolve, whether in the way we hope for them to or not. And sometimes this resolution does not come on our timeline. But either way, looking to the future and knowing that God is faithful and in control helps us to remember that in the midst of our worries, they are temporary. And God is eternal.
Reflect:
- Think of a time where you were worried about something and you can now see, looking back, that God was in control. Thank Him for bringing you through that time and ask that He would remind you of that the next time that you start to worry.
