Scripture: John 12:24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
Devotional: One of the most important truths to understand in the process of spiritual growth is that something must die. Every seed planted in the ground dies before new life begins to grow from it.
Jesus shared the words contained in John 12 to inform his disciples of His imminent death. He would die, but He would do so in order to be glorified. He knew His death would be followed by resurrection, and that His resurrection from the dead would enable eternal life for all who would believe in Him.
He also knew, that for those who would follow Him, a death was required. Each must take up their own cross and follow Him (Mark 8:34). He went on to say in John 12:25:
“Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
This is not just a one-time thing, it’s a continuous dying to self to live out the Kingdom life God intends for you. Jesus demonstrated it, and you and I must follow suit in order to follow Him.
