Scripture: John 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
Devotional: There is a popular phrase that is going around: speak your truth. In an effort to find what exactly this means, I looked for a definition. “My truth,” as people like to say, is truth relativism. Truth relativism states, “When someone makes a claim, that claim is made true or false by what they believe or how they feel, rather than by the way the world actually is.” This sounds like a pretty convenient way around arguments and hard conversations. By claiming that you have your own truth, you can officially close the door on anything you do not want to further discuss.
What an interesting way for the enemy to work. Our society thinks that each individual is entitled to their truth, with right and wrong being open to interpretation. But our Scripture for today very clearly states, “Your word is truth.” It does not say that the Bible is just one truth, or that the Bible is partial truth. No, the Word of God is truth.
Therefore, everything in it is truth. It is inerrant and infallible. So, while there are things in it that are counterintuitive to how this world says we should live, it is true and God honoring. The way that God has created us and called us to live is different than this world, and that should be no surprise because we live in a fallen world. In this fallen world, the enemy uses deception to keep us from worshipping God and living our lives for Him.
Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Pursuing a life that honors God will be no easy task. Every day on this earth, it is getting more and more difficult. But as this passage in Matthew says, the reward is life. True and everlasting life.
Reflect:
- Pray that God would foster a desire to be in the Bible and help you discern what the truth actually is.
