Day 16 What God Can Do Through Ordinary You

April 22, 2024

Scripture: Hebrews 11:9-10 By faith he [Abraham] made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Devotional: There’s nothing worse than waiting. Especially when it’s something we’ve been assured is coming. And the longer we wait, the more it erodes our confidence in that thing coming to pass.

Abraham experienced that kind of waiting; a test of a delayed promise. God had promised him that he would be a great nation, with great blessings and inheritance, but he and his people were living in tents. For years. It’s quite likely that Abraham had in mind something a little more secure when he initially headed out from Ur. And no doubt there were times He wondered if he had heard God correctly.

Abraham’s story shows us that a true believer will wait for God's timing because it's perfect, even without knowing when. Rather than looking at his current circumstances, Scripture shows us that Abraham was looking forward to the promised future whose architect and builder is God. God’s promises don’t always play out as we envision. But time and again we see His intent and His fulfillment of those promises are exceedingly, abundantly, more than we can imagine.
