Day 18 Religion & Politics

November 06, 2024

Scripture: 1 Timothy 2:1-3a NLT I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.

Devotional: As I write this devotional, I obviously do not know the outcome of the election. With it being the day after the election, none of may know the outcome yet. But even if we do, we can take time to pray for the candidates (whether they won or lost) and the leaders of this country. As our Scripture says for today, we should pray for those in authority.

First and foremost, we should pray for the salvation of those in leadership. We have a calling to preach the Gospel to all nations, and that includes our own. We have the opportunity to pray for the leaders of this country to truly know Jesus, to walk with Him, and to spend eternity in heaven with Him. We can also pray that leaders in our country will take brave stances for righteousness, even if it is not well received. Isaiah 7:9 says, “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.”

We can also pray for the families of the candidates. As we know, as soon as someone gets on a political platform, they and their families are under attack for everything that they do. This is certainly not a pleasant or comfortable way to live. We can pray for their families, that they would be protected from harm and unnecessary scrutiny.

And finally, we can pray that the President-elect and all of those appointed to office surround themselves with Godly advisors. The Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10). We want all of those making decisions about policies that impact us to do so out of wisdom and knowledge from God.

Regardless of the outcome of this election, we can continue to pray. As we desire for Christ to be magnified, it starts with praying for all people, including those involved in the election and our government.  We know that God is on His throne and can trust what He has planned.

Pray:

  • Pray for the salvation of the leaders of this country.
  • Pray that they would take brave stances that glorify God.
  • Pray for the safety of the candidates and their families.
  • Pray that those elected would surround themselves with Godly advisors.
