Day 22 What God Can Do Through Ordinary You

April 28, 2024

Scripture: Hebrews 11:32-34 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.

Devotional: When you think about a strong man in Bible history, it’s likely that the name Samson comes to mind. If you grew up in church, you might remember flannelgraph stories about his muscles, long hair, relationship with Delilah (his downfall), and his eventual revenge on the Philistines by knocking down the walls of their temple in a murder/suicide event. That’s a lot of drama for a kid to see in a flannelgraph!

If you’re not familiar with Samson’s story, you can read about him in Judges 13-16. And as we continue our series devotions talking about the kind of people God uses, we see Samson’s name written in the “Hall of Faith” example in the New Testament book of Hebrews. Along with words like “weakness” “strength” and “powerful in battle”, Samson accompanies other men of valor who accomplished great feats of victory in God’s name.

Although Samson was known for his strength– and God did amazing things through him – it is his weakness that we can learn most from. His is a cautionary tale, but also one that shows the depths of God’s grace.

Reflect:

  • When time allows, read Samson’s entire story in Judges 13-16. What stands out most to you?
