Day 27 Peace of Mind

May 19, 2023

Scripture: Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Devotional: Negative thoughts and patterns can become a stronghold in our lives.  They can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression, even eventually impacting our physical health in addition to our mental health. That’s why it’s imperative to address our negative thinking and work to overcome those patterns.

One of the most powerful tools to do that is writing the Word of God in your heart; that is, memorizing Scripture. Storing the very words of God in your heart and mind can help to crowd out the negative. And when the negative thoughts do come, you have a powerful weapon to fight with.

Ephesians 6:13-17 reminds us of the battle that we are in: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

You may recognize that the only offensive weapon listed in this lineup is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. No one wants to be backed into a defensive corner in the midst of a battle. You need a weapon to slay the enemy and God’s Word is just that weapon to help you win the war on the battlefield of the mind.

Reflect:

  • What commitment are you willing to make to memorize Scripture? Having a partner helps, so pray about an accountability partner to share your weapon training!
